Who am I?

Women's health practitioner, Free birth doula, founder of The Red Shed and The Meeting Womb c.i.c.

Hi, I'm Ruth Willis

Underpinning everything I do is my absolute belief that women are amazing and deserve better.

My journey began in the late 1990’s during my time at University, where I was studying a BA(hons) in Women’s Studies, I also had a part time job in a women’s refuge and I served as the Women’s Welfare Officer at the student union after graduating. Together with my degree course, these jobs highlighted to me how under-represented women are in today’s society, and the very real struggle women face, especially in the areas of healthcare.

After spending years in the hustle and bustle of London, I travelled to the south of Spain where I settled in a Tipi community in the Alpujarra Mountains. It was there that I met Vanessa Brookes, a spiritual midwife and the founder of the Da a Luz Post Modern Midwifery school; this was the beginning of my journey as a birth worker.

In 2014, I trained in Mizan Therapy, a mode of abdominal massage, and was soon assisting on the practitioner training courses. I loved my work with women and seeing them take control of their health, so much so that in 2018, I decided it was time the women of the north east had a space that was exclusively dedicated to their healing and well-being, and so The Red Shed was born!  I now work in The Red Shed and have the pleasure of welcoming all my clients to this wonderfully cosy and tranquil space. As well as being my therapy room, The Red Shed is available to hire and is host to various women’s circles and events, as well as sauna sessions.

More recently, I established The Meeting Womb, a Community Interest Company that will develop and deliver well-being projects for women and girls. On top of all this, I’m also studying Psychotherapy at the Northern Guild, with a view to bring together the talking therapy with the physical therapy of the abdominal massage and my knowledge of diet and nutrition to bring a truly holistic service to the women in our community.

In my free time, I love going off in my little camper van to find nice nature spots to park up in, go on leisurely walks and forage for medicinal herbs and plants to use in healing balms and tinctures, and for yoni steaming.
